Democrats made substantial gains in the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, by delivering a massive setback to President Donald Trump and Republicans. The party secured major victories in Republican states, including Texas, South Carolina, Ohio and Kansas. Democrats were predicted to take control of both chambers of Congress.

The result ignited doubts about voter choices. Economic dissatisfaction, the war involving Iran and rejection of Trump’s leadership surfaced as primary factors.

Why Trump Lost US Midterm Election Results 2026?

The economy played a vital role in voting decisions. Trump moved to the White House in 2024 promising to resolve inflation and boost living standards. However, soaring prices, tariffs and the economic influence of the Iran conflict debilitated confidence in that promise.

Exit polls by SSRS for a consortium of US media organisations noted nearly nine in ten voters regarded the cost of living essential. Around two-thirds blamed Trump for high prices, while about six in ten said his policies had badly affected the economy.

The Iran war fuelled frustration as voters questioned the administration’s priorities amid soaring household expenses.

The US midterm election 2026, thus became a referendum on Trump’s presidency. Around three-quarters of voters said they were disappointed with the country’s direction. CNN’s voter poll studied that more than six in ten rejected Trump’s performance.

About six in ten respondents in the AP Voter Poll stated Trump prioritised personal interests ahead of the country’s. Around 70% wanted Congress to exercise checks on the president.

Trump-backed candidates saw loss, including Ken Paxton in Texas and Darline Graham in South Carolina. Younger and Hispanic voters appeared to shift towards Democrats. Around seven in ten voters under 30 and six in ten Hispanic voters promoted Democratic candidates in local House clashes.
