1. The United Nations decided in 1972 to celebrate this day in a large conference, the Stockholm Conference. Over 113 countries met in Stockholm, Sweden, to discuss the protection of the environment. It was the first time that so many countries spoke on environmental matters in a joint meeting.

2. World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time on 5 June 1973. The theme of that year was ‘Only One Earth'. A theme is chosen every year on 5 June, and a country is selected to host the celebration.

3. Today, more than 150 countries celebrate World Environment Day. People from more than 150 countries participate in World Environment Day. This is also true for India! Schools, colleges, NGOs, companies and governments are involved and conduct awareness programmes.

4. World Environment Day is the biggest platform to raise awareness about the environment. Some 4 million people each year take part in the events, planting trees, cleaning rivers and imparting messages on saving the planet.

5. It is led by UNEP. The day is organised and led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). UNEP is a special organisation of the United Nations, established for the care of our planet.
