National Doctor's Day 2024: Every year on March 30, National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in the US. The day honours professionals for their dedication and contributions to society and the community. It is a chance to say “thank you” to our physicians for all their service to mankind.
This year, the National Doctors 2024 theme is “Wings & Stethoscopes: Healers of Hope."
Why is National Doctor’s Day celebrated in the US on March 30?
There are various reasons to support National Doctor’s Day. Firstly, Winder, Georgia, celebrated the first Doctor's Day on March 30, 1933. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, advocated for a day to honour doctors. On this first celebration of the doctors' deaths in 1933, the community sent cards and flowers to their graves. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors Day.
Secondly, Doctors Day was observed on March 30, 1842, when Crawford W. Long, M.D., gave the first ether anaesthetic for surgical purposes. That day, Dr. Long gave ether anaesthesia to a man before performing surgery to remove a tumour from his neck. Following surgery, the man swore that he felt nothing during the surgery and was not aware of anything until he awoke.
Later, President George H.W. Bush declared February 21, 1991, to be National Doctors Day in recognition of the nation's medical professionals' commitment and vision.
National Doctor's Day is a chance to express gratitude to doctors for their dedication and service. Send thank you notes, cards, or flowers to your doctors. Share your appreciation on social media. Consider making a donation to medical charities or volunteering at local hospitals. Take the time to reflect on the impact doctors have on our lives and communities. Attend events or webinars honouring healthcare professionals.
