Preparation Tips for ICSE Class 9th English Subject
ICSE Class 9 English Syllabus: Internal Assessment
The ICSE Class 9 English Internal Assessment carries 40 marks, covering both English Language and Literature in English. The assessments are conducted and evaluated by the school, with the assignments assessed independently by the subject teacher and an external examiner, who award 10 marks each. Schools are also required to maintain records of the assessment tests, presentation topics, assignments and marks awarded.
Paper 1 – English Language: 20 Marks
Listening Skills – 10 Marks
- Three listening assessments are conducted during Class 9.
- A passage of about 300 words is read aloud twice by the examiner.
- Students may make brief notes while listening.
- Students answer an objective-type test based on the passage.
- Around 30 students are recommended per sitting
Speaking Skills – 10 Marks
- Students give an oral presentation of about 2 minutes.
- The presentation is followed by a discussion with the examiner for about 3 minutes.
- Presentation topics may include:
- Narrating an experience
- Giving a description
- Giving directions
- Expressing an opinion
- Giving a report
- Relating an anecdote
- Commenting on a current event
- Students may refer to brief notes during the presentation.
- Reading directly from notes or excessive dependence on them may be penalised.
- Students are recommended to receive one hour of preparation time.
- Students may be given a choice of topics.
Paper 2 – Literature in English: 20 Marks
- Students complete 2 or 3 written assignments during Class 9.
- Each assignment should be approximately 300–400 words.
- Students are encouraged to work in pairs or small groups.
- Assignments may cover:
- Character or thematic analysis
- Socio-economic, cultural or historical background
- Summary or paraphrase
- Appreciation of literary qualities
- Identifying with a character and explaining actions
- Imagining alternative outcomes or endings
- Creating a graphic representation of a scene, story or poem
- Writing a diary entry from the perspective of a character
