Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai, has retained its number 6 NIRF ranking for two years now. The institute moved from NIRF rank 12 to NIRF rank 6 in five years, beating IIM Calcutta and XLRI Jamshedpur. However, older IIMs such as IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, etc., still are the top ranked MBA colleges in India.
Formerly known as National Institute of Industrial Engineering, NITIE, the institute, recorded a significant rise in NIRF rankings over the years. This has put IIM Mumbai alongside the established older IIMs. However, older IIMs still continue to maintain a strong score and better position in NIRF rankings. According to the official NIRF India Rankings reports, IIM Mumbai demonstrated a continuous upward trajectory from 2021 to 2024 before stabilizing at its peak rank in 2025. In 2021, IIM Mumbai ranking was 12, and it moved 3 places up in 2022, becoming 9th best MBA college in India. In 2023, IIM Mumbai NIRF ranking improved to 7th position and in 2024 it moved to 6th position. The institute retained the number 6 position in 2025 as well.

IIM Mumbai NIRF Ranking: From Rank 12 to 6 Over the Years
Various factors contributed to the improvement of ranking for IIM Mumbai from 2022 to 2025 which made the institute one of the MBA colleges in India. Check the year-wise comparison below:
IIM Mumbai moved up the ladder over the years and the rise was particularly notable in 2023, when NITIE moved from Rank 9 to 7, surpassing IIM Indore and XLRI. Overall score of 71.99 was barely 0.04 points higher than IIM Indore, but the RP score was considerably higher than XLRI, Jamshedpur.
It established lead in parameters including Graduation Outcome, Research and Professional Practice and Outreach and Inclusivity, OI. The overall score in the Perspective parameter was low but a good score in other parameters covered the deficit.
In 2024, IIM Mumbai moved to Rank 6 with an overall score of 75.73 and retained the position in 2025. In another development, IIM Lucknow moved to Rank 5 while IIM Calcutta moved to Rank 7 and IIM Indore to Rank 8.
Basically, IIM Mumbai’s scores improved across parameters particularly Graduation Outcomes and TLR from 2024 to 2025. Also, transition from NITIE to IIM Mumbai provided an immense opportunity and a +38.90 point leap in Peer & Employer Perception, which elevated the standards of the institute among its peers.
Improvement in Teaching, Learning and Resources and Graduation Outcomes
IIM Mumbai’s TLR score rose from 79.62 in 2022 to 85.20 in 2025. The parameter considers factors including student strength, faculty-student ratio, faculty qualifications and experience, financial resources and their utilisation. Graduation Outcomes are one of IIM Mumbai’s strongest areas in the 2025 NIRF assessment. The institute recorded a GO score of 99.84, higher than IIM Ahmedabad’s 98.72, IIM Bangalore’s 98.86, IIM Calcutta’s 98.87 and IIM Lucknow’s 96.96 in the same ranking.
Where Do Older IIMs Still Have an Edge?
The most visible gap is in the Perception parameter. In 2025, IIM Mumbai recorded a perception score of 62.03. Check below to know the PR score for other IIMs:

NIRF’s perception parameter is based on academic peers and employers. Therefore, the difference shows that established IIMs continue to have stronger recognition. Scores of older IIMs still are highly competitive which gives them an edge and make them have a better position. They remain ahead by capitalizing on deeply entrenched market perception and higher graduation outcome consistency. The primary reason is that these institutes retain a strong brand legacy.

From NITIE to IIM Mumbai: A Change in Institutional Identity
One major impact on the ranking trajectory of IIM Mumbai was its transition from NITIE to IIM Mumbai. Established in 1963, NITIE built a strong presence in industrial engineering, operations and management education. The institute transitioned to IIM Mumbai whilst retaining its existing institutional history.
The transition phase substantially contributed to institute’s PR score from 19.03 in 2023 to 57.93 in 2024. IIM Mumbai NIRF Ranking has reached Rank 6, but the NIRF data shows that its journey is not identical to that of India’s older IIMs. Its strongest scores now come in areas such as Graduation Outcomes and Outreach & Inclusivity, and perception remains the parameter where other established IIMs record higher scores.
