NIRF Ranking 2026: NIRF (The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF)) in 2021 added a new category named “Research Institutions." The main focus of introducing this category was to help students know which colleges not only teach but also produce serious research and PhD scholars. The Ministry of Education will release NIRF 2026, 11th edition, soon. The data submission window for NIRF 2026 has already been closed. Last year, we saw a brand-new sustainable development category being added, and it started deducting marks if an institution's research paper was withdrawn.
The idea behind bringing NIRF was simple, to help students compare colleges using facts and data instead of relying on reputation. Some colleges like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Madras, and IIM Delhi have been ranked top by NIRF for the last few years in the management category. IIM Ahmedabad is ranked as the number 1 institute by NIRF. NIRF on National Research Concentration: Key Highlights
NIRF data shows that out of 229 top institutions that applied under the research category, the top 50 alone produce more than half of the research publications. The findings confirm that strong research performance is the biggest factor behind institutions' overall ranking.

Research Output: Over a 3-year evaluation period, the institution has published over 500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals listed in Web of Science and Scopus.
Ph.D. Enrollment: The institution has a minimum of 1,000 students currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs.
Graduation Requirement: The institute must have graduated at least three full cohorts from its primary programs, which consist of a minimum of 3-year undergraduate or 2-year postgraduate degrees

Rankings keep changing every year; new colleges come up old ones slip down. But the research Institute category is different from other categories. Since this category was launched in 2019, the NIRF Ranking of the top five spots has barely changed. The same five centrally funded Technical Institutes have held the top five places. Top 10 Research Institutions Ranked by NIRF
The ranking of NIRF has remained stable since 2021. At the top is IISc Bengaluru is ranked 1st, followed by IIT Madras, ranked 2nd. There have been no major changes in the top rankings. The shift happened in 2022 when IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay swapped ranks 3rd and 4th, and that has remained the same since then.
Later, Homi Bhabha National Institute got ranked in the top 10 in 2023, pushing IIT Kanpur down a spot. Rank 10 kept changing a lot, moving between BHU Varanasi, VIT Vellore, and IIT Hyderabad. Overall, the top institute keeps leading India's research ranking.

NIRF Eligibility Rules 2026
To be considered for the National Institutional Ranking Framework categories, institution needs to meet two conditions, which includes

Research Output: The research output of the institution over the 3-year evaluation period comprises more than 500 research papers published in refereed journals listed in Web of Science and Scopus.

Ph.D. Enrollment: Minimum of 1,000 current students should have enrolled in Ph.D. programs
The aimof NIRF is to review which institutions really focus on research by publishing a lot of research papers or by training many PhD students. This does not involve comparing colleges on every scale, while also keeping colleges that do little research separated from colleges that are built for research.
Since 2025, NIRF has also started deducting marks if any research paper of any institute gets withdrawn. This rule is only applicable to the Research Institute Category and Engineering and Universities. For NIRF 2026, these rules remain the same.
