ITR Filing Date: In a recent update for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the ITR Filing deadline for eligible taxpayers. This extension has been granted for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27. It gives major relief to businesses and professionals, as it gives more time to complete their tax-related work without rushing.
The new tax audit report deadline has been extended from September 30 to October 21, 2026. On the other hand, the ITR filing deadline has been changed from October 31 to November 21, 2026.
The only problem here is, this extension is not for all the taxpayers. Eligible taxpayers should check the revised dates and complete filing within the new deadlines

Who Will Benefit From The ITR Deadline Extension?
Every year, there are a few people across the country who unknowingly or due to a technical error miss the date of the income tax return (ITR) filing. The government gives some relief and extends the date for a while so no one misses it. This buys time for the government as well, because the returns are huge in number.
The deadline extension primarily benefits companies and other taxpayers. These taxpayers have accounts that need to be audited. However, the revised deadline does not apply to the taxpayers who are required to file Form 3CEB for transfer pricing purposes.
For all the eligible taxpayers, filing an income tax return (ITR) by November 21, 2026, will be considered timely.
This extension can help taxpayers avoid the consequences of late filing. Late filing also includes a penalty of some amount. This extension can also help taxpayers in retaining the eligibility to carry forward business and capital losses. It may also allow them to claim certain deductions that are available only when the income tax return is filed within the prescribed deadline.
