Make In India At 12 Years: India is celebrating 12 years of Make in India. 2026 has marked over a decade of this initiative, introduced by the present government. September 25 marks the anniversary and highlights a decade of progress, putting India on the global map of manufacturing capabilities.

Make in India was launched in 2014 as an initiative to transform the nation into a production hub for the world. This program has surely made some noticeable changes. It has also delivered some exemplary programs and gains across sectors such as electronics, automobiles and defence.

These are some of the gains. Despite these advances, there are many challenges that remain in pushing investments and exports higher, and a few sectors lag behind overall in the economy.

Make in India: From Vision to Action, Building a Global Manufacturing Hub

After its launch in 2014, the Make in India mission had a clear tagline, reflecting its vision and ambition. It is to turn India into a global hub, take the local market to the global level, and introduce the world to our heritage and specialities.

To achieve this aim, the programme focused on attracting heavy investments, encouraging innovation, trying to build a strong infrastructure, and simplifying business processes for companies.

Over the decade, Make in India has evolved itself into a new version, Make in India 2.0. This has expanded its scope to 27 sectors, which include 15 in manufacturing and 12 in services.

This 2.0 evolution reflects a bigger shift; the shift shows intention turning into execution of a structured plan.

Make in India is immensely supported by initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme, National Single Window System (NSWS), PM GatiShakti and the India Industrial Land Bank, which have further strengthened the ecosystem.

These efforts have changed the scenario for India. Together, they aim to make doing business in India faster, smoother and more competitive, positioning the country as a reliable global manufacturing destination.

What Are The Objectives of Make in India? Key Goals Driving India’s Manufacturing Vision

  • To transform India into a global hub for manufacturing, design, and innovation
  • To attract domestic and foreign investments into key sectors
  • To promote innovation and strengthen research and development
  • To develop strong and modern infrastructure for industrial growth
  • To simplify business processes and improve ease of doing business
  • To increase the contribution of manufacturing to India’s GDP
  • To generate employment opportunities across sectors
  • To boost exports and improve India’s global trade presence
  • To encourage self-reliance through domestic production
  • To integrate India into global value chains

Steady Growth In India’s Manufacturing Sector

To make India a manufacturing hub, the country has to be extensively productive. India’s manufacturing sector has shown steady growth in recent years, added after the launch of the mission.

Manufacturing Gross Value Added (GVA) recorded a strong compound annual growth rate of 10.88% between 2022-23 and 2025-26. Not just this, with the rise in GVA, the manufacturing segment of the Index of Industrial Production also rose by 7% during April–July 2026 compared to the previous year.

These figures show how India’s industrial output is improving gradually and is supported by the measures and rising activity across the key manufacturing industries.

Sector
Key Growth Highlights
Electronics
Production increased nearly sevenfold from ₹1.9 lakh crore (2014–15) to ₹13.11 lakh crore (2025–26). Mobile phone production rose 33 times, making India the world’s second-largest manufacturer by volume.
Automobiles & Pharmaceuticals
Vehicle production reached 31.03 million units in 2024–25. The pharmaceutical sector recorded a turnover of ₹4.71 lakh crore.
Steel & Defence
Crude steel production doubled to 170 million tonnes. Indigenous defence production increased to ₹1.78 lakh crore.
Advanced Manufacturing & Technologies
Solar module capacity expanded significantly, along with strong progress in semiconductor and rare-earth technologies.

PLI Schemes Drive Investment And Job Creation In Manufacturing

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) has played a very important role in making a strong base for the manufacturing sector.
This has created an ecosystem across all the 14 sectors, which have eventually attracted investments of approximately ₹2.40 lakh crore. They have also generated production and sales worth more than ₹22.66 lakh crore and supported exports exceeding ₹15.20 lakh crore as of June 2026.

Over that, the schemes have created over 14 lakh jobs. These benefits are mainly concentrated in sectors such as electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals and specialty steel, which together account for nearly 83% of total PLI investment.

What Are Persistent Structural Challenges Of The Make In India Mission?

  • Manufacturing’s share in GVA has increased only marginally, from 14.6% in 2022-23 to 15.6% in 2025-26.

  • Exports have grown in absolute terms, with non-petroleum goods rising from $253.5 billion in 2014-15 to $388.3 billion in 2025-26.

  • India’s share in global merchandise exports remains largely unchanged at around 1.7%.

  • Private sector investment shows signs of weakness, with Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) declining as a share of GDP.

  • Manufacturing FDI growth has lagged behind overall FDI inflows in several years.

  • Capacity utilisation has improved but still remains below the 80% level, which is typically needed to trigger fresh investments.
