Indian Prime  Minister Narendra Modi, who took oath as the PM of India on 26 May 2014, and he began his third consecutive term as a Prime Minister of India on 9th June 2024.

By May 2026, the Modi government had completed 12 years of governance from the period between 2014 to 2026.

Top 10 Major Areas of Work Under PM Modi Government

1. Financial Inclusion Through Jan Dhan Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on 28 August 2014 to expand access to banking services.

• From this scheme, many people were brought into the formal banking system.

• Bank accounts helped people receive government benefits directly.

• The scheme became part of the JAM framework, which is also referred to as Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and Mobile.

• Till August 2026, more than 59 crore Jan Dhan accounts had been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) .

• According to the Finance Ministry, 56% of the accounts were held by women. However, 78% were in rural and semi-urban areas. 

2. Swachh Bharat Mission and Sanitation

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on 2 October 2014 with a focus on sanitation and cleanliness in India.

• A large-scale construction of household toilets took place all over India mainly in rural areas.

• Rural sanitation coverage increased substantially.

• Rural India was declared Open Defecation Free in 2019.

• The programme later moved towards waste management and ODF Plus activities.

• More than 12.19 crore individual household toilets had been constructed under the rural mission by August 2026. 

3. Drinking Water Through Jal Jeevan Mission

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched in August 2019 to provide tap water connections to rural households.

• The programme focuses on Har Ghar Jal.

• It aims to provide regular and safe drinking water through household tap connections.

• Rural household tap-water coverage increased from about 16.7% in 2019 to more than 82% by 2026.

• More than 15.91 crore rural households had tap-water connections as of August 2026. 

4. Healthcare Expansion

Healthcare has been another major area of government programmes.

• Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY was launched to provide health protection to eligible families.

• Ayushman Arogya Mandirs expanded primary healthcare services.

• Jan Aushadhi Kendras provide generic medicines at affordable prices.

• Medical colleges and medical seats have expanded over the years.

• Healthcare coverage was also extended to senior citizens aged 70 years and above under the Ayushman Bharat expansion.

These initiatives have been presented by the government as efforts to improve access to healthcare, particularly for poorer and vulnerable sections. 

5. Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship

The government launched Make in India on 25 September 2014 to encourage manufacturing, investment and entrepreneurship.

• The initiative focuses on increasing manufacturing in India.

• It promotes investment and innovation.

• It also focuses on improving infrastructure and business processes.

• Startup India and other programmes were introduced to support entrepreneurship.

• Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes were later introduced for selected manufacturing sectors. 

6. Agriculture and Irrigation

Several programmes have focused on farmers and agriculture.

• Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana focuses on irrigation.

• The programme promotes the idea of “Per Drop More Crop.”

• Soil Health Cards were introduced to provide information about soil conditions.

• Organic farming has been promoted through schemes such as Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana.

• Other measures have focused on farm productivity, irrigation and farmer income support. 

7. Infrastructure and Connectivity

Infrastructure development has been a major part of the government's work.

• National highways and expressways have expanded.

• Railway electrification has increased.

• New semi-high-speed Vande Bharat trains were introduced.

• Metro rail networks have expanded in several cities.

• Airport connectivity has increased.

• PM Gati Shakti was introduced for integrated infrastructure planning.

The government described the last decade as a period of major infrastructure expansion in its 12-year review. 

8. Digital India and Digital Payments

Digital technology has changed many government and financial services during this period.

• Digital India promoted online government services.

• Aadhaar became an important digital identity platform.

• Direct Benefit Transfer helped transfer many government benefits directly to beneficiaries.

• UPI made digital payments easier through mobile phones.

• Digital systems have also been used in banking, taxation, healthcare and other public services.

The government has linked the expansion of digital services with greater access and more direct delivery of benefits. 

9. Women and Girl Child Welfare

The government introduced several programmes focusing on women and girls.

• Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao was launched on 22 January 2015 at Panipat, Haryana.

• The programme focused on the declining Child Sex Ratio and issues related to the girl child.

• It included awareness campaigns and community participation.

• Ujjwala Yojana provided LPG connections to women from poor households.

• Self-Help Groups and initiatives such as Lakhpati Didi have focused on women's economic participation. 

10. Rural Development and Basic Services

Rural development has also been a major focus.

• Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana was launched on 11 October 2014.

• The programme encourages MPs to work towards the development of selected villages.

• Rural roads, houses, electricity, drinking water and digital connectivity have expanded.

• PM Awas Yojana-Gramin has supported construction of houses for eligible rural families.

• Rural infrastructure programmes have aimed to connect villages with markets and public services.
