BDS to MBBS Bridge Course: The country has been gearing up for the changes in the education system; be it medical education or technical education or school education. Efforts have been made in order to improve the education system further. In a recent development, there has been a proposal to start BDS to MBBS Bridge course soon. MCI, DCI and Health Ministry are to review the curriculum for this. The proposal may take the real shape soon and then it will allow dentists to practise as general physicians. To get the proposal in the shape of a reality, the Medical Council of India, MCI; Dental Council of India, DCI and Union Health Ministry are to review the curriculum.
The interesting thing to know is that Niti Aayog had agreed on this proposal earlier. The proposal was given by the Dental Council of India (DCI) in which it stated that the dentists should be allowed to practise as general physicians if they complete the bridge course. The office of the Prime Minister conducted a meeting in this regard. After the completion of the meeting, Niti Aayog issued a letter in which it said, “In the said meeting it has been inter-alia decided to explore the option of allowing dentists to practice family medicine/mainstream medicine following a bridge course.”
It is important to know that the parties concerned will meet and decide the course ware for the proposal. The MCI, DCI and the Ministry of Health will look for the possibilities if the proposal can be implemented in near future. The idea of the bridge course was brought to the fore in 2016 by the DCI. DCI was of the opinion that this will help tackle two major problems; one of shortages of the doctors and the other of placing the BDS students after completion of the course.
