What Happened in Panama on October 9 and 10?

There were two strong earthquakes in Panama on 9 October 2026. The first tremor was reportedly a magnitude 7.7, epicentred approximately 12 kilometres west-southwest of Pitaloza Arriba in Herrera province, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It was at a depth of 12.6km.

A second major earthquake, 6.6 magnitude, hit the region of Río Grande later that day.

There were lots of aftershocks, some as large as magnitude 5. Severe shaking led to evacuations and safety inspections in certain communities.

The impacts were reported throughout Panama, with damage to buildings reported in the central provinces. Shaking was also reported in neighbouring Colombia.

What Was the Cause of the Panama Earthquakes?

The earthquakes were connected to the Azuero-Soná Fault System, Reuters reported, citing Panama's geologic authorities.

Earthquakes are caused by stress accumulating within the Earth's crust. When rocks suddenly slide on a fault, the stored energy is released as seismic waves, which vibrates the ground.

Panama is located on the tectonically active region of Central America, where tectonic plates are moving and interacting, resulting in earthquakes.

The multiple tremors following the main shocks were similar to aftershocks. Rocks near the fault adjust to changes in the stress after the larger earthquake causing the earthquake aftershocks.

Seismological analysis is used to determine the exact properties of each earthquake, such as the depth, location and fault motion.

What Is an Aftershock?

An earthquake that has occurred after a larger earthquake in the same general region.

Aftershocks can last for hours, days, weeks or even longer. Many are smaller than the main earthquake, but some can cause serious damage, especially if buildings are already damaged by the initial earthquake shaking.

Over 100 aftershocks were reported after the two big quakes in Panama. There were some measured values of 5.8, 5.5 and 5.2.

The frequent shaking continued to raise the level of alert for residents and emergency services.

What Was the Aftermath of the Panama Earthquakes?

The earthquakes damaged homes, schools, health facilities and transport infrastructure. Authorities began inspecting buildings and roads and arranging assistance for affected residents.

The Panamanian government released the following preliminary figures on October 10:

Type of damage or impact
Preliminary figure
Residences assessed as affected
426
Educational institutions affected
419
Health facilities affected
21
People treated for injuries in the initial government report
Around 21
Vehicle bridges with structural concerns
9

The figures were preliminary and could change as further inspections were completed. Associated Press reported at least 27 injured people on October 10, with no deaths attributed to the earthquakes at that time.

Major Consequences

  • Damage to homes: Hundreds of homes were evaluated for earthquake damage.

  • Affect on schools: Hundreds of educational establishments were affected and had to be inspected for safety and classes were postponed while they were reviewed.

  • Road and bridge damage: Transport was impacted by damaged roads, landslides and concerns regarding vehicle bridges in some areas.

  • Impact on health: Government's initial assessment reported damage at 21 health facilities.

  • Evacuations: People evacuated buildings while officials assessed for damage.

  • Emergency assistance: A state of emergency was proclaimed by the government to facilitate relief and aid to affected families.

Was a Tsunami Warning Issued After the Panama Earthquakes?

Yes. On 9th October, the major earthquake resulted in a tsunami warning, which was lifted.

If an undersea earthquake causes a massive amount of water to move suddenly, a tsunami can result. Not all earthquakes trigger a tsunami, however.

During earthquake shaking, individuals should leave their homes if they are told to evacuate, but should NOT take any action to prevent a possible tsunami if not told to do so.

What Is the Current Situation in Panama on October 11, 2026?

As of October 11, Panama is continuing its emergency response and assessing the extent of the damage.

The government has given top priority to helping affected families, inspecting damaged buildings, infrastructure, and checking on educational institutions prior to reopening schools.

The quake also briefly disrupted operations at the Tocumen International Airport which was later restored. The Panama Canal remained in business.

Damage assessment of buildings and assistance to the affected communities is ongoing. Residents have been asked to stay out of buildings which could be unsafe until they are inspected.
