India Appoints its First Chief Election Commissioner (1950)
This day is the day when Sukumar Sen became the first Chief Election Commissioner of India. He encountered the huge challenge of holding the first general elections for a newly independent country. Sen was able to control the entire exercise thus establishing a global benchmark with regard to the manner in which elections are conducted in the world. His contribution laid the groundwork to the strong and sustainable electoral system in India.
India Launches its First Satellite, Aryabhata (1975)
On this day, India had entered the space age with the launch of its first satellite Aryabhata. The satellite was developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was named after the renowned Indian mathematician of the fifth century Aryabhata. It was propelled into orbit by a Soviet rocket called Kosmos-3M that was launched by Volgograd Station (Kapustin Yar), USSR. This satellite was used to carry out experiments in X-ray astronomy and solar physics. This was the first step that demonstrated the technical ability of India and led to future missions to the Moon and Mars.
The Waco Siege Ends in Tragedy (1993)
The siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, by the federal government finished in a disastrous fire. The deaths of 76 individuals including David Koresh resulted after a 51 day standoff with the FBI. It shaped the development of other political movements in the USA in the 1990s.
The Oklahoma City Bombing (1995)
In Oklahoma City, 168 people were killed in a truck bomb that exploded in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building. This domestic terrorism incident is the deadliest in United States history. Timothy McVeigh carried out the attack as a violent protest against the federal government. A memorial has been erected on the site today to commemorate the victims, survivors and first responders.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger Becomes Pope (2005)
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected as the 265th leader of the Catholic Church. He took the name Pope Benedict XVI following the death of Pope John Paul II. Known as a brilliant theologian, his papacy focused on reviving traditional Christian values in Europe. He later made history by becoming the first pope to resign from office in six centuries.
Fidel Castro Resigns from the Communist Party (2011)
After 45 years of leadership, Fidel Castro resigned as a Central Committee member of the Communist Party of Cuba. He formally transferred power to his brother Raul Castro and the long period of the island nation came to its end. It brought a new era in the internal politics and foreign relations in Cuba.
NASA’s Ingenuity Helicopter Flies on Mars (2021)
NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter made history as the first aircraft to achieve powered, controlled flight on another planet. The small drone rose ten feet above the surface of Mars, hovered, and landed safely.
