The Karnataka Examination Authority has issued the draft engineering seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year and this could bring a big change for engineering admissions across the state. The new draft, issued under the Karnataka Professional Educational Institutions Act, 2006, sets out seat distribution for government, aided, and private unaided engineering colleges.

What has caught the most attention is the stricter control on computer science and related IT branches. The rules have been introduced to slow down the rapid increase in high demanding courses while also encouraging interest in core branches of engineering that have shown lower admissions in recent years. Read the article below for further information.

New CSE Seat Cap for Private Engineering Colleges

One of the biggest changes in the draft seat matrix is the limit placed on computer science and similar streams in private institutions. According to the new guidelines, private colleges will not be allowed to increase intake in computer science and related IT programs if their total combined strength in these branches has already crossed 900 seats.

This is a major decision because many colleges have expanded these programs aggressively over the years due to strong student demand. However, the expert committee felt that the growth had become uneven, especially when compared to current job market realities and placement trends.

Intake Expansion Rules Made More Strict

The draft also introduces tighter rules on new courses and future expansion. If a college starts a new department or course, the initial intake cannot be more than 60 seats. Even in later years, annual growth will also be limited to 60 seats, even if AICTE approval allows a higher number.

Another key point is that courses which have already reached 300 seats or more will not be allowed any further increase. In addition, programs with an existing intake of 180 seats or above can get only up to 60 extra seats, and that too only if the institution provides valid NBA or NAAC accreditation. These rules show that the government wants controlled growth instead of unchecked expansion.

Seat Data Highlights from the Draft Matrix

The draft document shares category wise intake details. As per Annexure A Government Engineering College and VTU constituent college shows that 6900 controlled KEA seats along with 345 supernumeracy quota seats. Annexure B covers aided engineering courses that lists 2803 controlled intake seats and 147 SNQ seats. These numbers give a clear picture of how engineering seats are distributed as per different institutions and how tightly the process is being monitored this year.

What This Means for Students and Colleges

The KEA draft engineering seat matrix shows that Karnataka is now trying to rebalance engineering education. This may mean tougher competition for CSE seats in private colleges while for institutes it is a signal to focus more on quality, accreditation and balanced course planning.
