Delhi University (DU) will hold an emergency Executive Council meeting on October 13 to consider a Rs 12,000-crore plan to expand hostel facilities for around 40,000 students and redevelop three of its oldest hostels.

The university’s Finance Committee approved the proposal on Friday, October 9. It will now be placed before the Executive Council for consideration.
According to a notice issued by DU Registrar Vikas Gupta, the meeting will consider the recommendations made by the Finance Committee.

DU Hostel Expansion Plan: Three Old Hostels To Be Rebuilt

The proposed plan includes the reconstruction of Jubilee Hall, International Students House and the Postgraduate Men’s Hostel. All three are among the university’s oldest hostels and require major structural repairs.

Professor Balaram Pani, who heads DU’s Building Committee, told a media organisation that the proposal would increase hostel infrastructure capacity to around 40,000 students. He also said that vacant spaces around the three hostels could be used to expand accommodation facilities. If approved by the Executive Council, the proposal will be sent to the Education Ministry for further approvals, Pani said.

Satya Niketan Building Collapse Renewed Focus On Student Housing

The proposed expansion comes more than a month after a five-storey building housing a boys’ paying guest (PG) facility collapsed at Satya Niketan on September 6, killing several Delhi University students.

The incident brought renewed attention to the shortage of on-campus accommodation at DU and its affiliated colleges. With hostel places limited, many students depend on private rented accommodation and PG facilities. The proposed Rs 12,000-crore plan aims to expand the university’s hostel infrastructure and provide accommodation for more students.

What Happens Next?

The Executive Council will consider the Finance Committee’s recommendations at its October 13 meeting. The proposal will then need to be sent to the Education Ministry for further approvals, according to Professor Pani.

The plan is still at the proposal stage, and the next steps will depend on the decisions taken by the university and the subsequent approval process.
