Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta interacted with women students at Delhi University’s North Campus and directed officials to improve lighting, check CCTV cameras and repair damaged footpaths.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta made a surprise visit to Delhi University’s North Campus late Wednesday evening to discuss women students’ concerns about safety, transport, hostels and college facilities.
During her interaction with students outside the Arts Faculty, Gupta asked whether they felt unsafe while travelling at night or faced problems related to their colleges. According to media reports, she assured students that the government would take steps to address their concerns.
Delhi CM Orders Better Lighting At DU North Campus
During the inspection, Gupta identified several dark spots on the campus and directed officials to improve lighting. She asked them to identify poorly lit areas, trim tree branches blocking streetlights and install additional lights wherever needed.
She also expressed concern over broken and uneven footpaths. Officials were asked to inspect the entire stretch and repair damaged pathways, keeping the needs of students with disabilities in mind.
CCTV Cameras And Campus Security Under Review
The Chief Minister reviewed CCTV surveillance arrangements and sought details about the number of cameras installed, their working condition and areas that needed additional coverage. She directed officials to ensure that existing cameras were working properly and install more wherever required.
Gupta also asked students about the availability of police response vehicles and women police personnel at night. Students reportedly said women police personnel were present and response vehicles arrived promptly when needed.
She called for better coordination between Delhi Police and the university administration to strengthen campus security. Officials were directed to re-inspect the Arts, Law and Science faculties, parking areas and other sensitive locations to identify safety gaps. The Chief Minister also flagged garbage and poorly maintained green spaces and asked officials to ensure cleaning and better upkeep of the campus.
Delhi Government Working On PG Policy, Hostel Facilities
During the interaction, Gupta discussed concerns related to paying guest (PG) accommodation and hostels. She said the Delhi Government was preparing a PG policy to introduce rules and standards for the sector.
She added that the government was working towards building new hostels and improving existing facilities to provide students with safer and better accommodation.
Gupta also encouraged women students to undergo self-defence training.
Officials Asked To Act On Safety Concerns
Reiterating that women students’ safety could not be compromised, the Chief Minister directed officials to address the issues identified during the visit without delay. She said the action taken on her instructions would be reviewed later.
At the end of the inspection, Gupta continued her informal interaction with students over tea. She encouraged them to raise concerns related to their colleges, hostels, transport and safety with the government. Senior officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Delhi Police accompanied the Chief Minister during the visit.
