Why Are Rice And Sugar Prices Rising?

The sugar and rice prices have seen the highest changes in the list of everyday essentials. Rice, which is a staple food for almost all the regions in India, sees a surge, and sugar sees an overall import stress.

Sugar prices have increased significantly due to lower production, weather-related and strong festive demand pressure. When we weather, the excess rainfall and waterlogging in major sugar-producing states in India have affected the crop. Maharashtra and Karnataka are under the influence of the weather and crop disease. This has affected the production estimation for the overall consumption for the nation. Not only that, according to reports, the diversion of sugar towards ethanol production has also reduced domestic availability.

Not only that, bulk purchases by sweet manufacturers, beverage companies and confectioners ahead of the festive season have further tightened supplies.

Another analysis in the rice prices says that the prices have risen amid weather challenges, with a weaker monsoon affecting kharif rice sowing. This year the El Niño effect has added significant pressure to the crop and has affected the overall production.

Supply constraints and seasonal demand have added further pressure, making these everyday staples a little less easy on household budgets.
