Upcoming CJIs of India From 2026 to 2033: On 23rd November 2025, Chief Justice B.R.Garvi retired as the 52nd Chief Justice of India after a tenure of six month, and he was succeeded by Justice Surya Kant, who is the current & 53rd Chief Justice of India, until he retires in February 2027.

Meet the Eight Judges

Justice Surya Kant, 53rd CJI

Justice Surya Kant is the current and the 53rd Chief Justice of India, and he joined the Supreme Court in May 2019. 

Before he joined to Supreme court, he worked in Punjab and Haryana Hight Court, and later he also became the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

He has been among the important benches, where the Article 370 was removed. He was also a part of the bench, where Section 6A of the Citizenship Act was there, and with all these he has given 291 judgement at the higher court.

Justice Vikram Nath, 54th CJI

Justice Vikram Nath will be the 54th Chief Justice of India, after Justice Surya Kant will retire in February 2027. 

He will be serving as a CJI of India from February 2027 to 23 September 2027 for about seven months.

He reached the Supreme Court as judge in August 2021 from the Allahabad High Court, and he was also a Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court.

He was on the bench that allowed reservations to be split into smaller groups inside Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He has written 260 judgements.

Justice B.V. Nagarathna, 55th CJI

Justice B.V. Nagarathna will be the 55th Chief Justice of India, and she will be the first women Chief Justice of India. She will assumes her post as CJI in September 2027.

But, she will only serve as the CJI of India for 30 days only, and she will retires on 30 October 2027.

She came from the Karnataka High Court. In the 2016 demonetisation case she was the only judge who disagreed with the rest. Her view was that the right steps had not been followed. She has written 326 judgements, the most among these eight.

Justice P.S. Narasimha, 56th CJI

Justice P.S. Narasimha will be the next Chief Justice of India, and will joined after the Justice B.V. Nagarathna will retire.

He will assumes as CJI of India in November 2027 and for the next six month, he will be serving as CJI, and will retire in May 2028.

He was a lawyer first. Only two CJIs before him came straight from the Bar, S.M. Sikri and U.U. Lalit.

As a lawyer, he argued for the Union government in the Ayodhya land case and the NJAC case. He has written 218 judgements.

Justice J.B. Pardiwala, 57th CJI

Justice J.B. Pardiwala will be the 57th Chief Justice of India, and he will be serving as Chief Justice of India for almost 2 years, 

He will joins as CJI of India in May 2028, and will retires on 11 August 2030, which will be the longest serving days for any CJI of India 

He came to the Supreme Court in 2022 from the Gujarat High Court.

Two of his judgements got a lot of attention. One set time limits for Governors and the President to sign state bills. 

The other, on stray dogs, asked for them to be moved to shelters and it caused a lot of anger. He has written 307 judgements.

Justice K.V. Viswanathan, 58th CJI

Justice K.V. Viswanathan will be the 58th Chief Justice of India, and he will joined as CJI of India in August 2030. He will be the fourth CJI from the Bar.

He was made a senior advocate in 2009 and joined the Supreme Court in May 2023. His term will be around ten months, ending on 25 May 2031.

He has written 78 judgements so far, fewer than the others, since he joined later.

Justice Joymalya Bagchi, 59th CJI

The next Chief Justice of India will be Justice Joymalya Bagchi as 59th CJI after Justice K.V. Viswanathan will retire in May 2031.

He will be serving as CJI of India for only four month, and he will take retire on October 2, 2031.

He served in the Calcutta High Court and the Andhra Pradesh High Court before this. One reason he was chosen for the Supreme Court is that no Calcutta judge had become CJI since 2013. He has written 17 judgements.

Justice Vipul Pancholi, 60th CJI

Justice Vipul Pancholi will be the 60th Chief Justice of India, and he will assume the office after Justice Joymalya Bagchi will retires in October 2031.

He will be serving as Chief Justice of India for about 1.5 years, and he will take retires as CJI of India in May 2033

He started in the Gujarat High Court in 2014, moved to Patna, and became its Chief Justice in July 2025.

His name caused some debate. Reports said Justice Nagarathna, who sits on the Collegium, did not agree with picking him.
