For the first time, the world's most expensive 'Miyazaki' mango was offered to Lord Ram at the Ayodhya temple. On 15 June 2026, the 'Miyazaki' mango offering was made to the deity along with a Tulsi (Holy Basil) leaf. The mango worth Rs 1 lakh a piece was cultivated by a local farmer named Omprakash Singh, who planted the tree around two years ago, keeping in mind Ayodhya's climatic conditions.

The Japanese 'Miyazaki' variety mango, also known as the "Egg of the Sun", is valued between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh per kilogram in the international market. A single mango of this variety costs around Rs 1 lakh, making it one of the most expensive mango varieties in the world. Singh noted that the Mango is known for its exceptional sweetness, nutritional value, and high fibre content.

"I planted the tree about two years ago to test its viability in Ayodhya's climate, and it has yielded about a dozen fruits, each weighing between 150g and 300g," Singh told ANI. Singh shared he is also growing various other varieties of mango, including Thailand's Banana Mango, Australia's R2E2, and Indian staples like 'Chaunsa' and 'Dasheri'.

Miyazaki mangoes are grown in Miyazaki city, located in Kyushu, the third-largest of Japan's four main islands. Miyazaki mangoes are known as 'Taiyo no Tamago', or 'Egg of the Sun'.

Miyazaki mangoes are originally 'Irwin' mangoes that were developed in the 1940s in Florida. Later, during the 1980s, the Japanese started cultivating this variety, which resulted in distinct and unique, sweet, flavourable mangoes.

Not all mangoes qualify as a Miyazaki mango. For it to be tagged as a Miyazaki mango, it must meet these criterias:

  • sugar content must be at least 15 per cent
  • Uniform in colour
  • No injury or scratches
  • Weight should be more than 350g

How are 'Miyazaki' mangoes different from other mangoes?

Miyazaki mangoes are deep purplish green in colour when in growing stage, and later develop ruby red colour when fully mature.

A single Miyazaki mango weighs more than 350g. Miyazaki are emit a strong, sweet and fruity aroma. They have creamy, juicy-textured, vibrant yellow colour flesh.

Miyazaki have a luxury tag to them with prices ranging over Rs 2.5 lakh to 3 lakh per kilogram. What makes Miyazaki so expensive is the meticulous cultivation method, extraordinary care and labour, strict quality standards, and limited production.

Specialised, labour-intensive cultivation techniques are employed. These mangoes are grown in a greenhouse, where each mango is wrapped in a small net and suspended in air so that every part of the fruit receives sunlight. To ensure this, a reflector is placed under each mango.

Also, the mangoes are never picked manually. They are left to ripen and fall themselves into specially placed nets to ensure peak mature mangoes.
