ICMR is popularly known as Indian council of Medical research is atop body in India for the formulation, coordination, and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the largest and oldest medical research bodies in the world. The ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Health and Family welfare. The organization is established with the specific objective of sponsoring and coordinating medical research in the country. The council’s research priorities include management and control of communicable diseases, fertility control, maternal and child health, control of nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for health care delivery, containment within safety limits of environmental and occupational health problems. These efforts are undertaken with a view to reduce total burden of disease and to promote health and well- being of the population.

The governing body of ICMR is presided over by the union health minister. There are many experts who have a significant role to play in the in scientific and technical matters and the board is in turn assisted by a series of scientific advisory groups, scientific advisory committees, expert groups, task forces and steering committees and many more. The institute has constantly worked on specific area research such as tuberculosis, cholera, diarrheal diseases.

Apart from managing all such activities, ICMR also funds task forces which emphasis on a time bound, goal oriented approach which clearly defines targets, specific time frames, standardized and uniform technologies. The organization also conducts research fellowships, short term visiting fellowships, short term research studentships, and various training programs that are conducted by the institute itself and headquarters. The council also awards prizes to Indian scientists and there are significant contributions to biomedical research as well as those works in the underdeveloped parts of the country. The Indian Journal of Medical research is published under the auspices of the council.

The organization also constantly works on changing public health scene, and on issues such population growth, infectious diseases, and these two have continued to be some major problems. Thus, to tackle such issues the research on the related subjects have been intensified and some problems of cardiovascular diseases, metallabolic disorders, mental health problems, neurological disorders, blindness, liver diseases, hearing impairment, cancer, drug abuse and many more have been identified and solutions of the same are constantly worked upon. Research is being done on various herbal/medicine remedies and attempts have been made to strengthen medical informatics.
