About NIOS
NIOS is popularly known as national institute of open learning. This was established by ministry of human resource development by the government of India to provide education in remote areas free of cost. The NIOS holds a joint collaboration with common wealth of learning and UNESCO. The examinations under NIOS are held twice in a year in the month of April-May and October and November. The mission of this program is to provide relevant, continuing and holistic information through open and distance learning system. As stated above, there are joint international ventures by the institute which proves to be extremely beneficial for the students.
The institute has provided admission to more than 1 million students to pursue education. All these efforts were done in 2004 to 2009 at secondary and senior secondary levels. This system of education has been of extreme importance for the students as it has been a helping hand for the students who would have never experienced education. This step has provided elementary education to the school drop outs, out of school learners and neo literates. There are various departments and units such as vocational, academic, administration, evaluation and student support services. All these departments have contributed immensely towards the growth and development of children. There are various courses under NIOS. For instance the secondary course; this course is equivalent to the 10th standard when it comes to quality of education. In this course students are allowed to choose their subjects and hence basic five subjects are mandatory.
Another type of course is senior secondary course; this course is especially for the 12th standard and is equivalent to the curriculum provided in class 12th. Another one is open basic education. This particular course offers primary education which is equal to the formal education provided in the school. Adding on, this also offers education at three levels; level A which is similar to class 3, level B which is similar to class 5 and level C which is equivalent to class 8. All these divisions have proved to be extremely beneficial for the students who are not provided with the basic education.
Apart from all these courses there are vocational courses. These courses include all certificate and diploma courses and there are more than 83 courses covered under this scheme such as agriculture, engineering and technology, home science and hospitality management courses. All these courses indeed shape the personality of an individual and makes them confident.
