About NIT, Rourkela
National Institute of technology, Rourkela previously known as Regional engineering college Rourkela is a publically funded institute of higher learning in the field of engineering and technology located in the city Odisha. The institute or NIT Rourkela is a deemed university which is governed by the board of directors who are responsible for the overall superintendence, direction and control of its affairs. The director of the institute is responsible for managing the day to day affairs of the institute. However, the director for the same is supported by the dean i.e. the dean for academics, the dean for student welfare, the dean for planning and development, and etc.
Admissions into the same previously were based on AIEE known as All India entrance examinations, but the same were replaced to Joint entrance examination conducted by the central board of secondary education and also through counselling sessions conducted by the central seat allocation board. The institute also offers post graduate courses in the field of mathematics, physics, chemistry and bio technology. There are also five year integrated courses offered by institute.
As far as the infrastructure of the institute is concerned, the campus is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, and the land for the same is provided by the government of Odisha which makes it one of the largest institute engineering campus in the country after IIT Khargarpur. The courses are mostly residential on a full time basis. The institute also houses departments like physics, chemistry, mathematics, and humanities.
The campus is also equipped with stadium which successfully has been host to several national level university. There are also multiple courts near the hostels particularly for playing lawn tennis, basket- ball and volley ball. Not only the sports club, has the institute also comprised of a huge library which holds of about 65,000 books and 18,000 back volumes of periodicals. The library has also successfully purchased license to access over 2000 online research journals on science and technology to foster local research activity. In a nutshell, all such activities play a very important role in the foundation of students.
Besides the academic part and extra- curricular activities, there are various cultural festivities which are organized by the institute. It goes without saying that each and everything is managed by the bunch of students. This is how students learn to manage things and also their managerial skills are conditioned respectively.
