All You Need To Know About Sudarshan Setu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated India’s longest cable bridge, Sudarshan Setu. He expressed his happiness in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. He wrote, "Delighted to inaugurate Sudarshan Setu today—a bridge that connects lands and people. It stands vibrantly as a testament of our commitment to development and progress."

Important Points About Sudarshan Setu

The Sudarshan Setu is a cable-stayed bridge in India, connecting the Beyt Dwarka island in the Gulf of Kutch and Okha. Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari approved the construction of the bridge in 2016. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the bridge between Okha and Beyt Dwarka on October 7, 2017. The other important things about Sudarshan Setu are:

  • Sudarshan Setu, or Sudarshan Bridge, is the new name for the bridge, which was formerly known as 'Signature Bridge.' Beyt Dwarka is an island close to Okha port, approximately 30 kilometers from Dwarka town, home of the well-known Dwarkadhish temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.
  • The four-lane cable-stayed bridge is 2.5 km long. This is India’s longest cable bridge, built at a cost of ₹978 crore.
  • On the upper parts of the walkways over the bridge are solar panels that will contribute to the production of one megawatt of electricity. Four lanes and 2.50-meter-wide walkways are present on both sides of the bridge.
  • The Sudarshan Setu holds immense significance for pilgrims, simplifying travel between Okha and Bet Dwarka. Prior to the bridge's construction, pilgrims had to rely on boat transport to reach the Dwarkadhish Temple in Beyt, Dwarka.
  • The bridge aims to simplify access for devotees commuting between Okha and Bet Dwarka. Before its construction, the pilgrims had to rely on boat transport to reach the Dwarkadhish Temple in Beyt, Dwarka.
  • The Signature Bridge boasts a unique design, featuring a footpath adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and images of Lord Krishna on both sides.

Priest in Beyt Dwarka Temple, Jignesh Joshi, told ANI, "This is the first time PM Modi will come to Dwarka for darshan. The most beautiful thing is that the bridge that will be opened is in the name of God, 'Sudarshan'. Everyone will remember this. We are all thankful to Modi ji. We cannot even explain our happiness in words. Many good wishes to PM Modi from all the priests."

Other than Sudarshan Setu, the Prime Minister also inaugurated Gujarat’s first All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot today. The Prime Minister will virtually open four other recently constructed AIIMS in Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, in addition to the Rajkot AIIMS.
