Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kanpur has been elected as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences India (NASI). The fellowship will take effect from January 1, 2027. It has been given in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions. The development is important for students, researchers and the wider academic community because it highlights major Indian work in advanced materials and technology driven research. Shantanu Bhattacharya’s Research Spans Materials Devices And Applied Science
Professor Bhattacharya’s research focuses on the design and development of functional materials and the processes used to build them across different length scales. His work covers Bio MEMS Lab on Chip systems nanotechnology microfluidic system design and fabrication sensors acoustic metamaterials water remediation and energy storage devices.
This wide research base connects basic science with practical use. It supports work in healthcare sensing clean water and advanced engineering systems. IIT Kanpur has also highlighted his work and described it as innovative research across several important technology areas. His election as a NASI Fellow reflects the value of this long standing contribution to science and engineering.
Iit Kanpur Professor Also Leads Key CSIR Institutions
Along with his academic role at IIT Kanpur Professor Bhattacharya is currently serving as Director of CSIR Central Scientific Instruments Organisation in Chandigarh. He also holds additional charge as Director of CSIR Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute in Pilani. These roles place him at the centre of major scientific and research institutions in the country.
The National Academy of Sciences India was founded in 1930. Its aim is to promote science and technology in all branches and provide a national forum for exchange of ideas and publication of research by Indian scientists. The academy is financially supported by the Department of Science and Technology. It is also recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Department for Scientific and Industrial Research. Bhattacharya’s selection adds another major academic honour to IIT Kanpur and recognises his contribution to Indian science at both research and institutional levels.
