The new-age job risk is now spreading like a parasite. One after another, big giants are cutting jobs at speed. All this is happening in the name of restructuring. Now, Volkswagen has revealed its Future Plan 2030. This plan reveals job cuts and aims at reducing costs. It also reveals a plan to simplify car models. This will also tackle strong competition from China and rising tariffs.

What Is Volkswagen Group's plan?

Volkswagen Group has signed off on Future Plan 2030, a sweeping restructuring strategy designed to lower costs and increase efficiency. The group will axe around 50,000 more jobs worldwide, bringing total planned cuts to just under 100,000. By 2035, it will also cut its car models in half and decrease variants by around 75%. By cutting the number of models offered, Volkswagen aims to streamline production, cut costs and better contend in the global car market.

Four German Factories Face An Uncertain Future

  • Volkswagen has not said the four German plants will close, but their future remains uncertain.
  • Cars may gradually no longer be produced at Volkswagen factories in Emden, Zwickau, Hannover and Neckarsulm between 2031 and 2034.
  • The company is looking for other uses for the facilities.
  • Volkswagen is expected to have a new production plan for its European factories by June 2027.
  • Volkswagen’s European factories can produce over 500,000 more cars a year than the brand expects to need.
  • In other words, Volkswagen has more production capacity than it needs.

Why Is Volkswagen Cutting Jobs?

Volkswagen is cutting jobs because it faces a number of challenges. Demand in China and Europe has weakened, and competition from Chinese carmakers has intensified. Production costs are higher, and US tariffs are cutting into profits. In the first six months of 2026, Volkswagen’s operating profit declined by 11.6% to Euro 5.9 billion from a year earlier. Its operating margin also fell to 3.8% from 4.2%. VW CEO Oliver Blume said Volkswagen’s costs were about 20% higher than those of its peers. “I’m afraid that the US tariffs that are currently in place could effectively cost us around €5 billion a year in operating profit,” he added.

What Is Volkswagen Group's Plan?

Volkswagen had agreed to cut more than 35,000 jobs at its German sites by 2030 in December 2024. It also planned to trim production capacity in Germany by 734,000 vehicles. The restructuring plan is the result of months of talks between Volkswagen management, the workers and the government of Lower Saxony, which is a shareholder. Volkswagen wants to streamline its management, reduce the number of business units and focus on five of its most productive markets. By 2030, the company wants to sell nine million cars a year and achieve a 9% operating margin. It's planning to invest Euro 135 billion between 2027 and 2031.
