Key Facts

What Is the New Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Seed?

The new seed is a non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed. It is especially developed for growing high maize that can be used to make popcorn fro earring in snacks.

It will be launched by VP C. P. Radhakrishnan, and it is India’s first non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed.

It has three important features; these are:

• Non-GMO: It is not genetically modified through genetic engineering.

So, these seeds were designed for growing a special type of popcorn maize rather than ordinary maize.

What Is Popcorn Maize?

Popcorn maize is a special type of maize whose kernels can pop when they are heated. A popcorn kernel contains a small amount of moisture inside a hard outer covering. When the kernel is heated, the water inside turns into steam, and while pressure builds inside the kernel, eventually the outer covering breaks open.

The inside then turns into the familiar soft and fluffy popcorn.

This is why not every type of maize can make good popcorn. Popcorn maize has special characteristics that allow it to pop properly.

What Does Non-GMO Mean?

GMO stand for Genetically Modified Organism, which means a GMO crop is produced by changing its genetic material using genetic engineering.

While Non GMO crops does not produced by changing its genetic material using genetic engineering.

So, Non-GMO popcorn maize means popcorn maize that has not been genetically modified through genetic engineering.

What Is a Hybrid Seed?

A hybrid seed is made by crossing two selected parent plants.

Scientists and plant breeders choose parent plants that have useful qualities. They cross them to produce a new plant with selected characteristics.

So, a hybrid seed is not the same as a GMO seed. A hybrid seed can be completely non-GMO.

This is an important point because many people think that hybrid and GMO mean the same thing. They do not.

GMO Popcorn Maize vs Non-GMO Popcorn Maize

The launch of the non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed is a notable development in India’s agriculture sector. The seed is specially related to popcorn production and combines three important features: non-GMO, hybrid and high-expansion.
