The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Assam has increased from Rs 2.4 lakh crore in FY20 to Rs 3.5 lakh crore in FY25. This growth is much higher than the national average. In the same period, the overall GDP of India increased by just 29%.

Thus, Assam had a growth rate of nearly 16% as compared to the overall growth rate of the country.

Why is Assam Growing So Fast?

Assam's fast growth is not because of one reason. It is because of many things working together:

1. Oil and Gas: Assam is one of India's important states for oil and gas production. This brings a lot of money to the state.

2. Agriculture: Assam is known for its tea gardens. One of the largest tea producers in the world. Besides tea, farmers also cultivate rice and other crops which contribute to the income of the state.

3. Roads, Bridges, and Airports: The central government has invested heavily in the construction of roads, bridges, railways and airports in the North East region of India. This has helped to ease the business in Assam. More trade means more growth.

4. Tourism: There are many beautiful places for tourism in Assam, such as Kaziranga National Park (which is also home to the one-horned rhino) and the Brahmaputra River. Now, there are more tourists and money for the local people, which is intended to increase tourism in Assam.

5. New Industries: Assam has a rapid growth rate in sectors like food processing, logistics and petrochemicals. Setting up industries in any area is a direct link to the growth of the state because infrastructure and setting up industries need a lot of people to work. So, directly it generates jobs and provides incomes.

What Does GSDP Mean?

As per the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Chhattisgarh, GSDP, which stands for Gross State Domestic Product, is a crucial economic indicator used to assess and analyse the economic performance of individual states within a country.

It serves as a comprehensive measure of the total economic output generated within a state's boundaries over a specified period, typically a fiscal year.
