When Will Earth’s Days Become 25 Hours Long?

One day on Earth equals to 24 hours since the Earth takes 24 hours to make one revolution along its own axis.

But researchers have found out that the Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down, leading to an extension in duration of days.

The main reason behind this phenomenon is the effect of Earth's gravitational force on the moon and vice versa.

As per the research findings, Earth's rotation has slowed down by 1.7 milliseconds each century due to tidal friction.

Is the 24-Hour Day Coming to an End?

The concept of the end of the 24-hour day seems quite strange, but it is actually a naturally occurring event that has taken place on earth over billions of years.

Earth has slowed down its rotation because of the gravitational effect of the moon.

Even though the occurrence of 25-hour days will not take place until about 200 million years later, this natural event makes the study of earth's evolution much easier.

When Will Earth’s Days Become 25 Hours Long?

According to NASA scientists, in about 200 million years, the duration of a day on Earth is predicted to be 25 hours.

25 Hour Day is a slow process that occurs very slowly which neither will be detected by the next generation nor any other subsequent generation.

The explanation for this 25 Hour Day phenomenon is tidal friction exerted by the Moon. The gravitational pull exerted by the Moon results in tides.

Tides function as brakes for Earth's rotational speed, resulting in elongated days.

When did the 24-Hour Day Start?

The current day span of 24 hours was not always the case. Due to its rapid spinning on its axis compared to what happens nowadays, the time spent in a day was very short in the early stages of the formation of the earth.

According to geological studies, a day took roughly 19 hours one billion years ago. However, the earth took several hundred million years for its day cycle to reach 24 hours owing to the effect of the moon's gravity.

Impact of 25-Hour Day on Humans

A 25-hour day in the future would involve longer daylight hours and nighttime hours. But since this is expected to happen millions of years from now, the effects of the shift will allow enough time for man, animals, and plants to adjust themselves biologically.

Researchers predict that a 25-hour day will not cause any disruptions all of a sudden. Rather, the shift will be slow enough to affect sleeping habits, ecosystems, and daily life patterns on Earth. The prospect of having a 25-hour day sounds intriguing for a person who only knows 24-hour day.

Conclusion

The Earth’s 24-hour day cycle is not forever. This is because the effect of gravity from the Moon is making the Earth’s rate of rotation gradually slow down, such that there will be days of 25 hours in another 200 million years. While this phenomenon may not be experienced within human time frames, it shows how our planet evolves with time.
