What About Kerala?

Kerala is now at number 4 with a literacy rate of 95.3%. But Kerala is still the most literate big state in India. States like Mizoram and Nagaland have very small populations, so it is easier to reach every person.

Kerala has been number one for decades. It only recently moved to fourth place because smaller northeastern states improved very fast.

Why Is Mizoram So Literate?

Here are the simple reasons:

1. Schools everywhere, since a long time
Mizoram has had schools run by churches since before India got independence. Education was always treated seriously in this state.

2. The whole community helps
In Mizoram, education is not just the government's job. Families and local communities make sure every child goes to school.

3. Teaching in local language
Children in Mizoram are taught in their own language first. This makes learning easier and more effective.

4. Girls study equally
In Mizoram, boys have 99.2% literacy and girls have 97% literacy. There is almost no gap between boys and girls. This is rare in India.

Why Was Kerala Number 1 for So Long?

Kerala did not become literate overnight. It took hundreds of years of effort.

It started way back in 1817. The queen of Travancore, Rani Gowri Parvathi Bhai, said that the government should pay for every child's education. That decision changed the state forever.

After independence, the Kerala government made education free for all children up to Class 10. They built schools even in villages. They gave students free books, free meals, and free transport.

Kerala also focused a lot on girls' education, which most other states ignored for a long time. Today, Kerala's female literacy rate is 94% which is one of the highest in the country.

Where Does India Stand Overall?

As per the latest PLFS 2023-24 data, India's overall literacy rate is 80.9%. This means about 81 out of every 100 Indians can read and write.

This is much better than before. In 1951, only 18 out of 100 Indians were literate. So India has come a very long way.
