PM Suryodaya Yojana: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir consecration ceremony announced the launch of the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana. The Prime Minister stated during a meeting that every home with a roof can use the sun's power to lower their electricity costs and become fully Aatmanirbhar for their electrical needs. He mentioned in an official tweet, "All the devotees of the world always get energy from the light of Suryavanshi Lord Shri Ram. Today, on the auspicious occasion of consecration in Ayodhya, my resolution got further strengthened that the people of India should have their solar rooftop system on the roof of their houses."

"The first decision I have taken after returning from Ayodhya is that our government will launch 'Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana' with the target of installing rooftop solar on 1 crore houses. This will not only reduce the electricity bill of the poor and middle class but will also make India self-reliant in the energy sector," he added further.

What is the PM Suryodaya Yojana?

Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana is a central government scheme which aims to provide electricity to low and middle-income individuals through solar rooftop installations, along with offering additional income for surplus electricity generation. The Prime Minister said that the power of the sun can be harnessed by every household with a roof to reduce their electricity bills and to make them truly Aatmanirbhar for their electricity needs. Also, he directed that a massive national campaign should be started to mobilize residential segment consumers to adopt rooftop solar in large numbers. 

These rooftop solar panels are photovoltaic panels connected to the main power supply unit. Thus, it reduces the consumption of grid-connected electricity and saves electricity costs for the consumer. This scheme to make India self-reliant in the energy sector will include citizens who belong to the BPL or poor people with very minimal investment.

Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana Rules & Eligibility

PM Suryodaya Yojana will provide citizens with solar systems 24x7. The various rules and eligibility to get a permanent solution of electricity without bills are: 

  • Applicants must be permanent citizens of India.
  • Applicant’s annual income should not exceed Rs 1 or 1.5 lakh.
  • One must have all the original documents.
  • Government employees cannot reap benefits.

Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana Details

To be one of the beneficiaries of PM Suryodaya Yojana you need all the below documents:

  • Aadhar card
  • Income certificate.
  • Domicile certificate
  • Mobile number
  • Electricity bill
  • Bank passbook
  • passport size photo
  • Ration card.

How to apply for the PM Suryodaya Yojana?

The process to register for PM Suryodaya Yojana is as follows: 

STEP 1: Sign Up/ Log in to the official PM Suryodaya Yojana.

STEP 2: Click on the ‘APPLY’ section available on the left side of the HOME page.

STEP 3: Select your State and District.

STEP 4: Fill all the required fields.

STEP 5: Enter your Electricity Bill number.

STEP 6: Provide details about the Electricity Bill and Solar Panel details.

STEP 7: Now, give measurements of your rooftop.

STEP 8: Select a solar panel according to your rooftop.

Once your application gets approved and verified you will receive a subsidised amount in your bank account. As of December 2023, India's installed solar power capacity reached approximately 73.31 GW, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's website. Whereas, the installed capacity of rooftop solar as of December 2023 is approximately 11.08 GW. At present, the Centre offers a National Rooftop Scheme that covers 40% of the capital costs of solar rooftop projects in the form of financial aid.
