The creator of Chandigarh’s Rock Garden Nek Chand Saini died in Chandigarh on 12 June 2015. He was 90.
His creation Rock Garden of Chandigarh was opened for public on 24 January 1976. The garden is maintained by the Nek Chand Foundation, formed in 1996. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1984
The Padma awardee Nek died few days before his 40 figurative mosaic sculptures were to be put on display for the first time in the UK Pallant House Gallery in the setting of historic Chichester (West Sussex) from 13 June to 25 October 2015. The works are on loan from the Nek Chand Foundation in London.
Born on 15 December 1924 in Shakargarh region, now in Pakistan, Chand immigrated to India with his family and settled in Chandigarh in 1950.
