He was replaced by director designate Prof S Bandyopadhayay who was set to assume the office on 1 August 2015 on Roy’s superannuation.

Dr Bimal K Roy was on 10 June 2015 removed as the Director of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI).

He was removed from the position one-and-a-half months before the end of his term.

He was replaced by director-designate Prof S Bandyopadhayay who was set to assume the office on 1 August 2015 on Roy’s superannuation.

The ministry accused him of indiscipline and removed him on a reasonable apprehension that he may indulge in propagation of indiscipline and mischief, including acts of administrative and financial impropriety in the interregnum up to 31 July 2015 when he is set to demit the office.

Roy was appointed to the position in August 2010.

Roy, a renowned cryptologist, completed his bachelor and masters degree from ISI and holds a Ph.D in Combinatorics and Optimization from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
In April 2015, he was conferred with Padma Shri Award, India’s fourth highest civilian honour in the discipline of literature and education.
