Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued new 5 rupees and 10 rupees coins bearing images of Goddess Vaishno Devi on 16 January 2014. The coins were issued to commemorate the silver jubilee of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board.
RBI had already issued six more commemorative coins in 2014 to commemorate 150 years of Kuka Movement, 150th birthday of Swami Vivekananda, 150th birthday of Motilal Nehru and 150th birthday of Madan Mohan Malaviya.
According to Coinage Act 1906, the responsibility for coinage, designing and minting vests with the Government of India. RBI only monitors the distribution of the coins.
