World Robot Olympiad, 2015 held in Doha; 2016 session to be held in Delhi

This is the first time in the history of WRO that Indian students were able to win three medals (1 Gold & 2 Silver) and one position (Eighth).

World Robot Olympiad (WRO), 2015 was held in Doha, Qatar from 6 November to 8 November 2015.  The 2015 session of the event was held with theme Robot Explorers. The event saw participation of students from more than 55 countries.

This is the first time in the history of WRO that Indian students were able to win three medals (1Gold & 2 Silver) and one position (Eighth).


Winners in Elementary category (India)
a) Storm Divers from Ahmadabad won first rank. Participants included Aaman Shah, Aarav Savla and Shaurya Goenka.
b) Thunder Divers from Ahmadabad won second rank. Participants included Vir Gandhi, Ishan Patel and Param Adani.
Winners from Open category (India)
• Shadow Bots from Delhi won second rank. Participants included Jayant Sharma, Aman Thakur and Rohan Verma.
• Path Finders from Delhi won eighth rank. Participants included Dhariya Gupta, Ishaan Saini and Laxman Prasad.

Teams from over 225 different schools across India participated in this event to showcase their talent and creativity. The Indian delegation was led by Arvind Manjit Singh, JS (Culture).

Besides, the Minister of State (Independent charge) for Culture and Tourism Dr Mahesh Sharma on 26 November 2015 announced that for the first time the 13th World Robot Olympiad will be held in Delhi in November 2016. It will be organized by National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) with India STEM Foundation (ISF).

NCSM, an autonomous society under Ministry of Culture administers 25 Science Centres/Museums/Planetariums spread all over India. All having its Regional Centres and District Level Centres called Satellite Units (SUs).

ISF is an organization engaged in generating interest among students towards computer science, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (CS-STEM) through the innovative use of Robotics learning platform and other research based hands-on learning tools.

World Robot Olympiad
Formally established in 2003, the World Robot Olympiad is a global robotics competition for young people. Organizations from China, Japan, Singapore and Korea are considered the founding countries.

The World Robot Olympiad competition uses Lego Mindstorms manufactured by LEGO Education.


The first session of the event was held in 2004 in Singapore.

The competition consists of 4 different categories, Regular, College, Open and Soccer. For the Regular and Open categories, it consists of three different age groups and they are
Elementary: It includes participants below the age of 13
Junior High: It includes participants from ages 13 until 16 years
Senior High: It includes participants between 17 and 19

Participants can also compete outside their age group, but they must be younger than the specified age range and must partner up with someone in that age range.
