General Sedki Sobhi on 27 March 2014 was sworn-in as the new Defence Minister and Army Chief of Egypt. He succeeds, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, who resigned from both the posts on 26 March 2014 to contest in the Presidential elections.
Sobhi’s appointment was confirmed by Adly Mansour, the Interim President of Egypt at the weekly cabinet meeting in Cairo. Mansour on the same day also issued a presidential decree that promoted Major General Mahmoud Hegazy to a higher rank of lieutenant general. This decree has allowed him to replace Sobhi as the army’s chief-of-the-staff. Hegazy is the father-in-law of Sisi’s son.
Sisi resigned from both the posts because the newly approved Constitution of Egypt, only civilians can run for the post of the President.
