India on 5 April 2011 imposed a three-month complete ban on all food imports from Japan, citing fears over radioactive contamination from the latter’s nuclear disaster. Besides India, China, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States have banned food imports from Japan. In fact, India is the first country to impose a blanket ban on food imports from Japan. The blanket ban means complete ban.
The Fukushima area surrounding the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is one of the Japan’s top producers of vegetables, fruits and rice. The damaged nuclear plant sent radioactive material into the air contaminating drinking water and farm produce.
