The Statistics Day was celebrated across India on 29 June 2013. This day is celebrated on the occasion of Birth anniversary of Late Prof PC Mahalanobis. The National Sample Survey Office under the Ministry of Statistics Programme Implementation celebrated this day.
The Statistics Day was celebrated across the country by Offices of National Sample Survey, State Governments, Universities/Departments, Indian Statistical Institute and many more. On the occasion, lecture series, conferences, seminars, debates, quiz programmes as well as essay competitions were organised.
At the national level, the primary function was held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
Objective of the Statistics Day
The Statistics Day is celebrated with an objective of creating public awareness among people, especially the younger generation. The idea is to prompt people to fetch inspiration from Late Prof P C Mahalanobis about role of statistics in socio-economic planning along with the policy formation.
The day is celebrated across the country by participation of statisticians, State Directorate of Economics and Statistics personnel as well as people working in certain other departments, in the seminars. The Statistics Day is celebrated in recognition of the notable contributions made by Late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of economic planning and statistical development in India.
Theme of Statistics Day, 2013
The theme of the Statistics Day, 2013 was Labour and Employment Statistics. This was the seventh Statistics Day in a row since 2007.
Main activities that took place on Statistics Day 2013
On this occasion, National Award in Statistics which is constituted in the Honour of Prof. C.R. Rao was conferred upon Dr. Abhiman Das, who is an eminent statistician from the Central Bank of India- the Reserve Bank of India. On the occasion, he received citation, a shawl as well as a cash prize of 2 lakh Rupees.
Apart from this, the India Statistics Community in the Data Portal India as well as the important Statistical Publications such as Women and Men in India 2012, Children in India 2012- A statistical appraisal, India in Figures- 2013 as well as SAARC Social Charter India Country Report 2012, were released.
