The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda on 15 February 2017 presented the Kayakap Awards for 2016-17 in New Delhi.
The Kayakap Awards are conferred annually to encourage and incentivize Public Health Facilities (PHFs) about cleanliness and hygiene.

On this occasion, the minister also felicitated the District Hospitals, PHCs and CHCs for winning the awards in their respective states and union territories.
The awards were given to –
i. Best two District Hospitals (DH) in each state (only one best district hospital in small states)
ii. Best two Community Health Centres (CHC) or Sub District Hospitals (SDH) (limited to one in small states)
iii. One Primary Health Centre (PHC) in every district
First rank and second rank awardees at DHs level got Rs 50 lakh and Rs 20 lakh respectively. While Rs 15 lakh and Rs 10 lakh were given to the first rank and the second rank awardees at the CHC (or SDH) level respectively, the winner in the PHC category got Rs 2 lakh as prize money.
About Kayakalp Award Scheme
The Kayakalp Award Scheme was launched by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in May 2015 to improve hygiene in health institutions across India.
The objectives of the Kayakalp Award Scheme are -
i. To promote cleanliness, hygiene and infection control practices in public health care facilities
ii. To incentivize and recognize such public healthcare facilities that show exemplary performance in adhering to standard protocols of cleanliness and infection control
iii. To inculcate a culture of ongoing assessment and peer review of performance related to hygiene, cleanliness and sanitation
iv. To create and share sustainable practices related to improved cleanliness in public health facilities linked to positive health outcomes
