Chief Minsiter, Jayalalithaa formally announced the merger of the five Anna Universities of Technology (AUT) with Anna University in Chennai on 22 July 2012. The order is scheduled to come into effect from 1 August 2012.
By bringing all the technical institutions under one umbrella, students would be required to study a common syllabus, also students graduating this year, 2012-13 will receive degrees issued by the unified Anna University.
Following this move, a huge number of five thirty five engineering colleges affiliated to AUT’s in Chennai, Coimbatore. Madurai, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli will be affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai. Also, Anna University will have just one Vice Chancellor.
Zonal offices will be set up in Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai and Tirunelveli, which will be responsible for monitoring the running of affiliated institutions and address students' grievances. Students pursuing their under graduate and post graduate courses in AUT university departments will continue their studies through the zonal centres. Examinations for all students will be conducted by Anna University through its seventeen regional offices.
At present, Anna University is governed by a three-member committee comprising of,director of technical education Ramesh Chand Meena, AC Tech dean P Kaliraj and CEG dean M Sekar.
