IIT Kanpur Admission 2025-26: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has announced a new initiative for students aspiring to enroll in the BTech and BS programmes of the prestigious institute. The institute will admit students to the above mentioned programmes through international olympiads scores. This move will allow students to get admitted in the courses without clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
What is the New Initiative?
IIT Kanpur will offer admission to students based on their performance in international olympiads. This will begin from the academic year 2025-26. The objective behind launching this initiative is to seek students who have achieved exceptional scores in international olympiads held for subjects like Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology etc.

Which Departments will Adopt this Admission Route?
According to a statement by the institute, the admission through olympiads will be adopted by five departments. These are- Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences, and Mathematics & Statistics.
There will be a limited number of seats available for students who have performed exceptionally well in olympiads and have strong subject knowledge per department.
The statement reads, ‘’This initiative offers a unique opportunity for those students who wish to pursue their passion in these areas at one of India’s leading institutions, bypassing the traditional JEE (Advanced) route. Through this alternative pathway, IIT Kanpur is reserving seats in select departments for young innovators with exceptional analytical skills, making it one of the few institutes in India to directly recruit talent from prestigious global Olympiad platforms.’’
What is the Eligibility Criteria?
The eligibility criteria for this program is as follows:
1. Candidates to be of the same age as JEE Advanced candidates and to have taken their Class XII (or equivalent) exams for the first time in either the year of admission or the year prior, with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
2. Candidates must have attended the relevant Olympiad training camp in the subject for which they are applying.
3. Those who were previously admitted to IITs via JoSAA or had an IIT admission cancelled are not eligible.

What is the Selection Process?
There will be two stages in the selection process. First, the departments will shortlist candidates based on their olympiad rankings. The selected candidates will have to take a written exam and an interview in some cases. Accordingly, all seats will be filled within the five departments without overlap.
When will the Application Window Open?
This initiative will be set in motion with the call for applications in early March 2025. The window will close by the end of the same month. The five departments will hold the exam by the month of May. The institute will extend the offers to students in June.
This initiative will provide opportunities to students who have scored well in olympiad competitions. IIT Kanpur aims to bring forth students who will encourage innovation through analytical skills.
