1. Answer the following questions.

(i) What is precipitation?

Answer: 

The sun’s heat causes evaporation of water into vapour. When the water vapour cools down, it condenses and forms clouds. From there it may fall on the land or sea in the form of rain, snow or sleet. This process of falling of moisture in any form on the surface of the earth is termed as precipitation.

(ii) What is the water cycle?

Answer: 

The process by which water continually changes its form and circulates between oceans, atmosphere and land is known as the water cycle.

(iii) What are the factors affecting the height of the waves?

Answer: 

The factors affecting the height of the waves are:

  • Wind speed
  • Earthquake
  • Volcanic eruptions
  • Underwater landslides

(iv) Which factors affect the movement of ocean water?

Answer: 

The factors that affect the movement of ocean water are:

  • Temperature
  • The gravitational pull of sun and moon
  • Warm and cold currents

(v) What are tides and how are they caused?

Answer: 

The rhythmic rise and fall of ocean water that occur twice in a day, is called a tide.

Tides are caused by the gravitational force exerted by the sun and the moon on the earth’s surface.

(vi) What are ocean currents?

Answer: 

The streams of water flowing constantly on the ocean surface in a definite direction are called ocean currents. They are caused due to the temperature differences in ocean water situated at different latitudes.

2. Give reasons.

(i) Ocean water is salty.

Answer: 

Ocean water is salty because it contains a large amount of salt dissolved in it. Ocean water majorly contains the sodium chloride or the common salt.

(ii) The quality of water is deteriorating.

Answer: 

The quality of water is deteriorating due to the following human activities:

  • Large scale deforestation
  • Polluting the water bodies by throwing industrial waste
  • Increased use of fertilisers and pesticides that gets washed down into the water bodies.
  • Wastage of water
  • Lack of water treatment facilities
