Indian Ordinance factory on 25 March 2014 launched a light-weight revolver named Nirbheek. This revolver is designed especially for women to defend themselves from assault. Nirbheek that weighs 500 gm is a .32 bore revolver and it can be carried by women in their purses or handbags.
The name of the gun, Neerbheek had been derived from the name of the paramedical student Nirbhaya, the girl who was gang raped in a bud in Delhi on 16 December 2012. This revolver has been launched more than a year after the Delhi gang rape case of Nirbhaya. Nirbahaya is the name was given to the girl by the media, who died few days after the rape.
The revolver is made of titanium alloy and is priced 122360 rupees.
