Pranab Mukherjee, the President of India on 22 March 2014 conferred Gallantry and Distinguished Service Awards. He conferred three Kriti Chakras and ten Shurya Chakras to Armed Personnel at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. The five Surya Chakra was given posthumously.
The awards were given to them for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty.
Other medals conferred by Mukherjee on the day were
• Param Vishisht Seva Medals to fifteen persons
• Uttam Yudh Seva Medals to two persons
• Bar to Ari Vishist Seva Medals to three persons
• Ati Vishisht Seva Medals to twenty two persons
Pranab Mukherjee being a President of India is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces.
