Ashish Bahuguna was in the fourth week of July 2015 appointed as the Chairman of food safety regulator Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
His tenure will be of three years and he succeeded K Chandramouli whose tenure ended in January 2015. Since then the position was lying vacant and the Health Secretary Bhanu Pratap Sharma was given the interim charge of chairman of FSSAI.
Bahuguna is a 1978-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Rajasthan cadre who retired from the post of Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture in February 2015.
About FSSAI
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which consolidates various acts & orders that have hitherto handled food related issues in various Ministries and Departments.
The Acts which were subsumed under FSS Act, 2006 are Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, Fruit Products Order, 1955, Meat Food Products Order, 1973, Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order, 1947, Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order 1988, Solvent Extracted Oil, De- Oiled Meal and Edible Flour (Control) Order, 1967, Milk and Milk Products Order, 1992.
Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is the Administrative Ministry for the implementation of FSSAI.
