Union External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid held a bilateral meeting with John Kerry, the US Secretary of State on 22 January 2014 on the sidelines of Geneva II meet on Syria in Montreux.
During the bilateral meet, the two ministers reviewed the recent developments in India-US relations. They also agreed that the bilateral relationship is important for both the countries and looked forward towards early realization of the mutually-agreed calendar of bilateral exchanges. This included
• Visit of US Energy Secretary Moniz for the India-US Energy Dialogue
• Visit of the Commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Margaret Hamburg
The two sides also reviewed the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries. They also agreed to recognize the need to put in place institutional arrangements to look at all outstanding issues related to the privileges and immunities of diplomats of the two countries. This discussion was done in view of the recent episode involving the arrest of an Indian diplomat in New York.
External Affairs Minister also underlined India’s concern over trafficking visas issued to Indian nationals by the US Embassy in India.
