Filmmaker Rahul Rawail resigned from Oscar Selection Jury

Court directed by debutant Chaitanya Tamhane was selected to officially represent India at the 88th Oscars in 2015 in the Best Foreign Film category.

Rahul RawailFilmmaker Rahul Rawail on 23 September 2015 resigned from the Oscar Selection Jury. He resigned from his post citing differences with chairperson of the Jury Amol Palekar.

He resigned following the selection of National award-winning Marathi film Court as India’s official entry for Oscars 2016 (88th Academy Awards) by the jury.

Court was selected to officially represent India at the 88th Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category. Court directed by debutant Chaitanya Tamhane is a commentary on India's judicial system.

Court was also named the Best Picture at the National film awards 2015, besides winning 17 international honours after being premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2014.

Rahul Rawail

Rahul Rawail is an Indian film director in Bollywood known for his films like Love Story (1981), Betaab (1983), Jeevan Ek Sanghursh (1990), Anjaam (1994). His recent film was Jo Bole So Nihaal (2005).

He was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Director twice.

Rawail has launched a few of the Bollywood actors through his films like Kumar Gaurav and Vijeta Pandit in Love Story, Sunny Deol in Betaab, Kajol in Bekhudi (1992), and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997).
