Prime Minister of Nepal, Jhalanath Khanal expanded his cabinet on 4 May 2011. Khanal appointed Maoist leader and Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahdur Mahara as home minister while the Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum chairman Upendra Yadav was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign minister.
This cabinet reshuffle may result into intra-party differences in Jhalanatha Khanal’s party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and its important ally, the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). The decision to give the Home Ministry to the Maoists was severely criticized by a section within the UML.
