Tata Steel, the Indian major iron and steel making company, received a letter of intent from French, Eiffage Rail on 19 September 2012 for supplying high quality rails for the 182 kilometer high speed line. The line will connect the cities named Rennes and Le Mans. The project with its value Rs 315.15 Crore and will have to supply 50,000 tonnes rails for making of the Brittany-Loire Valley line. The rail line that is an extension of the high-speed link in existence will reduce the travel time by 37 minutes in between Rennes and Paris.
As per the deal, making of the steel will be done in UK and the rail rolling will be done in the French mills of Tata Steel. The delivery of the newly manufactured rails is expected to start from 2015. As per the statement of Eiffage Rail’s Managing Director, Jean-Luc Trottin they opted for Tata as a company to supply the rail because of their commitment of make the deliveries possible at the time of their need and at the site, where the job is to be done.
This will be Tata’s second high speed rail project in an year’s time and has turned up to be a milestone in the organization’s credibility in making of the world class product and services.
Few of the milestones achieved by Tata Steel in the recent past
1. The company made fresh investment in creation of a new technology that will help in production of long wear resistant rails, at its Hayange Rail Mill.
2. In the year 2011, the company upgraded its facilities to start production of 108 meter long rails. In the same year the company won an order to supply high-speed rails for the new 302 kilometer line joining French cities Bordeaux and Tours.
3. In the year 2009, Tata Steel entered into a deal SNFC, the French railway Operators for supply of rails for six years; the contract was signed at a cost of Euro 350 Million
The project will create round about 10000 jobs during the construction period. Rails of 108-meters in length will be supplied for the project. Tata is going to make an estimated investment of 50 million in a period of three years for the making of reliable and high-quality rail.
