The governments of Tamil Nadu and Puduchery had imposed the ban under provisions of the Deep sea Fishing Regulation Act, 2001. Every year, between 15 April 2013 and 29 May 2013, engine propelled trawlers are banned from fishing activities. This ban coincides with the spawning season for fish, during which they release eggs. The fishing nets used by trawlers can trap eggs and young ones leading to their destruction.
