The 45-day fishing ban was imposed from  15 April 2013 in the Eastern coast of Tamil Nadu to ensure unhindered breeding of fish. The fishing ban coming to an end on 29 may 2013. The fishermen of Nagapattinam, Rameswaram, Thoothukudi are ready for fishing. The fishermen will venture out into the sea with their equipments. The district administration warned the fishermen not to venture out of the international maritime border line to avoid confrontation with Sri Lankan Navy. The fishermen were also warned against using banned fishing nets which will destroy the sea wealth.

The governments of Tamil Nadu and Puduchery had imposed the ban under provisions of the Deep sea Fishing Regulation Act, 2001. Every year, between 15 April 2013 and 29 May 2013, engine propelled trawlers are banned from fishing activities. This ban coincides with the spawning season for fish, during which they release eggs.  The fishing nets used by trawlers can trap eggs and young ones leading to their destruction.

USA, Australia and Spain impose similar bans every year.  Kerala was the first Indian state which first imposed the ban aiming at resource conservation in 1988. Other coastal states followed the same rules and regulations.
