The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on 9 December 2015 adopted the resolution 2250 (2015) on youth, peace and security urging for greater representation by youth in the prevention and resolution of conflict.

The resolution defined youth as people aged 18 through 29. The Council urged Member States to consider setting up mechanisms that would enable young people to participate meaningfully in peace processes and dispute resolution.

The resolution was introduced by Jordan during its presidency of the Security Council in April 2015.

Highlights of the resolution

• It gives impetus to the youth-led peace building and conflict-prevention interventions to build peaceful communities and underpin democratic, inclusive governance.
• It urges Member States to consider ways to increase inclusive representation of youth in decision-making at all levels in local, national, regional and international institutions.
• It also urges to look out for appropriate mechanisms for the prevention and resolution of conflict.
• It covers the protection of youth in armed conflict and asks all parties in armed conflict to take the necessary measures to protect civilians, including those who are youth.
• It urged Member States to increase their political, financial, technical and logistical support in conflict and post-conflict situations.
• It also encourages all those involved in the planning for disarmament, demobilization and reintegration to consider the needs of youth affected by armed conflict.

The resolution requests UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to carry out a progress study on the youth’s positive contribution to peace processes and conflict resolution in order to recommend effective responses at local, national, regional and international levels.
