Vijayakanth, DMDK founder-leader and popular veteran Tamil actor died in Chennai on Thursday. The 71-year old actor-politician's death was confirmed by officials of Miot Hospital, where he was admitted for pneumonia and was on ventilator support. Earlier in the day, the party informed through a post on its official X handle that Vijayakanth was admitted to a hospital and put on ventilator support after he complained of breathing problems.

Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami,popularly known as Vijayakanth was born on 25 August 1952 in Madurai. He was an Indian politician and former actor born to K. N. Alagarswami and Aandal Azhagarswami. He also served as the opposition lead in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016. The actor, producer and director, Vijayakanth married Premalatha and has two sons.

The veteran actor Vijayakanth founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), a regional party in 2005. He aimed to provide an alternative political platform in Tamil Nadu, challenging the established Dravidian parties like the DMK and AIADMK. Later, he scripted history and served as the leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011-2016.
However, the political party faced internal challenges, which later affected the electoral performance in subsequent elections.

Vijayakanth won the Tamil Nadu State Film Honorary Award and Kalaimamani Award along with Best Indian Citizen Award, Honorary Doctorate and almost 13 Filmfare Awards for his exemplary contribution to South Indian Film Industry.
